The World Poker Tour (WPT) is going to set another record this coming December with a freeroll tournament that will have thousands of poker players interested in making a trip to Las Vegas. Wynn Las Vegas, during the WPT World Championship Festival, will play host to the first ever $5 million poker tournament freeroll Dec. 13-15. First place is guaranteed to make at least $1 million. The historic freeroll comes just one year after the World Poker Tour hosted the record-setting $40 million guaranteed WPT World Championship, a $10,400 buy-in tournament that attracted 3,835 entrants. Dan Sepiol took it down for $5.3 million thanks to a dominant final table performance for the ages.

Additionally, the series will feature highlights, including the WPT Prime Cup and the WPT 500 Championship. “It was such a pleasure hosting a WPT Championship festival at Playground back in May, that we embraced the idea of returning for a second 2024 showing,” WPT CEO Adam Pliska said in a press release. “Players will once again have a chance at three different WPT titles, including the most prestigious honor of being immortalized on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup.”

Game Set and Match: James Obst Triumphs in WPT Australia Championship James Obst adds a World Poker Tour title to his brace of World Series of Poker bracelets winning the WPT Australia Championship.

After busting the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event in 46th place when Michael Dyer cracked his pocket aces with pocket tens, James Obst began questioning whether he wanted to remain a professional poker player. In July of 2018, Obst revealed he was leaving poker and turning his attention to professional tennis. Obst played at the 2019 WSOP in Las Vegas but then wasn’t seen at the poker tables until he returned to “Sin City” for the 2023 WSOP. It was like he’d never been away, racking up nine cashes, including a fourth place in the $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

Timothy Chung has history with Dusk Till Dawn. Back in August 2012, Chung won his first live event, the DTD £150 Deepstack for £15,373. Five years later, he banked £78,700 for his victory in the DTD 1000 before helping himself to a £97,065 prize for a third-place finish in the £1,100 WSOP Circuit UK Main Event.

WPT Prime was at the Grand Casino Liechtenstein last weekend and saw 1,411 entries processed, including one from Switzerland’s Marc Sen. Sen may not be a name you are familiar with, but he pulled off a remarkable achievement. Sen finished as runner-up to David Kozma in the 2023 edition of WPT Prime Liechtenstein, outlasting all but one of the 1,664-strong crowd. He collected the equivalent of $193,200 that day, but falling at the final hurdle of a large-field poker tournament is a bitter pill to swallow regardless of the financial rewards that come with it.

Purice came into the final table second in chips behind Yurii Senchylo, and bided his time before timing his assault on the chip lead perfectly to dominate the latter stages and secure victory, along with a seat to the WPT Championship this December.
